Course syllabus

“English and American Novels” is designed to provide students with a compact and detailed introduction to the study and appreciation of short stories written by English and American novelists, including James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Joseph Conrad, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, William Dean Howells, Henry James, Kate Chopin, Jack London, Stephen Crane, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Ralph Ellison, and so forth. Understanding the literary history and narrative techniques about fiction and learning to read and analyze Western novels (especially English and American novels) are the main goals of the course. It is anticipated that students will familiarize themselves with some of the critical approaches that may help them in both their reading and writing. It is also anticipated that they will become more sensitive to the English language by reading closely, analyzing carefully and thinking critically.
