課程目標 Objectives
This course is designed for undergraduate students to learn the knowledge of Phonetics, the study of speech sounds in human language, with a particular focus in English. We will also take examples from other languages such as Mandarin for comparative and contrastive purposes. Two branches of phonetics will be introduced: Articulatory Phonetics and Acoustic Phonetics. The first part of the course is mainly on Articulartory Phonetics, the physiological foundations in producing sounds. The second part is then to explore the acoustic properties of speech sounds, and students will have an opportunity to analyze speech using free acoustic software such as PRAAT or WAVESURFER. It is hoped that students can develop their interest in this field or apply the knowledge to various studies in linguistics, e.g., Phonology, teaching techniques and its interface with other grammatical components.
